History
Friends Life Care at Home was established by two Pennsylvania Quaker Organizations: Jeanes Health System, which operates Jeanes Hosptial in Northeast Philadelphia, and Foulkeways, the first Quaker continuing care retirement community in the nation, located in Gwynedd, Pa.
Our Mission
As the nation’s first and largest continuing-care-at-home provider, our mission is to provide an affordable life care program for people who wish to remain in their homes as they age, based on the values of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

To make the name Friends Life Care at Home synonymous with quality life care for older individuals who wish to remain at home, and to maintain a reputation for the variety of programs and payment options we offer to meet the needs of a broad and diverse population. |
In 1985, Friends Services for the Aging approached the two organizations and encouraged them to establish an independent nonprofit joint venture to study and create the first “continuing-care-at-home” plan; thus, Jeanes/Foulkeways Corporation was formed. With grants from the Robert Wood Johnson foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts, the new organization set out to develop an innovative life care plan — an affordable alternative to the continuing care retirement community. This new plan would allow members to remain in their own homes and receive all the health-care-related services they need as they age.
In 1990, Jeanes/Foulkeways restructured to operate with an independently elected board of directors. The organization was renamed Friends Life Care at Home. Friends Life Care at Home began operations with 78 members under contract in July of the same year.
In 2000, Friends Life Care at Home acquired Intervention Associates, one of the oldest and largest fee-for-service care management providers in the Philadelphia area. Intervention associates is a nonprofit subsidiary of Friends Life Care at Home.
The Quaker Tradition
The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) maintains a long and cherished tradition of providing programs for the aging. They were among the first to establish a continuing care retirement community and the first to develop a continuing-care-at-home plan in the United States. Rooted in respect for the inherent dignity and worth of each person, Quakers prize the ideals of integrity, inclusion, simplicity, compassion and peace. These are the values upon which Friends Life Care at Home operates. As a Quaker-based organization, we focus on ability vs. disability, and recognize that prolonging independence is crucial to emotional and physical quality of life as we age.
